Stout Beer Tasting

This week we're featuring one of my favorite beer styles, Stout, for our beer tasting. Stouts are very dark, almost black beers, and feature a heavily roasted flavor profile. This is achieved by brewing with malt that has been kilned until it resembles burnt toast. Imperial Stout is an extra strong version of stout. It’s dense, opaque black and strong in alcohol , with a note of sweetness. Burnt cocoa and dried fruit flavors are typical. Oatmeal Stouts are a variation of sweet stout which has a small proportion of oats used in place of roasted malt, which has the effect of enhancing body and mouthfeel. They tend to be highly flavorful with a velvety texture and sometimes a hint of sweetness.

We have four excellent beers for you to sample with a regular Stout, an Oatmeal Stout, an Imperial Stout that uses a Belgian yeast strain, and an Oatmeal-Imperial Stout, at prices ranging from $3.59 to $9.89 per bottle. They're so good that Beer Advocate has designated three out of four of them as Exceptional/World Class.

"Deep, rich, and malty with hints of chocolate and coffee. It's what espresso would be if it had the gumption to be beer. We use two different hop additions, specially selected crystal malts, roasted barley, and oatmeal to give it a soft and silky mouth feel. Makes a great dessert. Or meal." 7.0% ABV

"A full-bodied stout with focused chocolate flavors and plenty of hops and malt, Cadillac Mtn.
