Belmont Monthly Wine Specials -
May |
|
Italy is one of the Spirited Gourmet’s favorite wine
regions. Every single region has a different set of
indigenous grapes and cuisines. That being said,
there is a wine for every type of food you can
imagine. While the Euro may be causing some Italian
wine prices to rise, there are plenty of selections
in our store that continue to defy that trend. Join
us this month as we taste through the well-known
areas of Tuscany and Piedmont as well as the “other”
regions that do not get the attention they deserve
such as Le Marche, Puglia, Friuli and others. |

Maculan 2006
Pinot & Toi (Veneto) White
Reg Price/This Month
$14.99/$13.49
Internationally
praised for their dessert wines, the Maculan family
makes great dry wines as well. This white is a blend
of 60% Tocai, 25% Pinot Bianco and 15% Pinot Grigio.
This stainless steel white is intensely perfumed and
offers refreshing notes of citrus and apples. It is
well balanced on the palate with loads of fresh
peaches and pears. Pair with antipasti, pasta with
shellfish, risotto and grilled white meats. |

Corte Marzago
2006 Bardolino (Veneto) Red
Reg Price/This Month
$14.99/$13.49
There was a
time when the word “Bardolino” was a popular
“flavor” on jug wines in the 1980s. Bardolino,
however, is a region just like Chianti that produces
some very good wines. This wine made from the native
varietals of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara has a
light body, with juicy berry fruit and a touch of
spice. Like Beaujolais, you can put a slight chill
on this. It is perfect for the warm weather. |

San Giovanni 2006 Falerio “Leo Guelfus”
(Le Marche) White
Reg Price/This Month
$11.99/$10.79
The
little known Falerio DOC in the southern portion of
Le Marche – a central coastal region – produces this
interesting white wine. Made from a blend of native
varieties Pecorino, Verdicchio, Passerina and
Trebbiano and fermented in stainless steel, this
wine offers up aromas of ripe apples, almonds, lime
blossom and aromatic herbs. It is deliciously full
on the palate and will work with most light dishes. |
Castello Monaci
2006 Salice Salentino “Liante”
(Puglia) Red
Reg Price/This Month $14.99/$13.49
This wine from the
Salice Salentino DOC in Puglia –
the heel of Italy – is a blend of 80% Negroamaro and
20% Malvasia. “…another beauty. Made in a very
sweet, ripe style, it offers notes of plums, prunes,
leather, tar, smoke and earthiness. It should
continue to drink beautifully over the next several
years.
Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.”

Argiolas
2006 Vermentino “Costamolino”
(Sardinia) White
Reg Price/This Month $14.99/$13.49
The
Argiolas Vermentino sets the golden standard. It has
an intense, yet delicate bouquet that displays
citrus, pineapple, tropical fruits and honey that
are supported by zesty acidity. Delicate and
pleasantly refreshing on the palate, Costmolino is
the wine of choice for many dishes, from fish
antipasti and pastas to vegetables terrine, salads,
white meat casseroles, and risotto. Asian food and
sushi works as well. |
Casalone
2007 Mariposa Dolce (Piedmont) Sparkling Red Reg
Price/This Month $15.99/$14.39
The Brachetto grape, with its low tannin level, good
acidity and well-defined perfumes, is ideal for
sparkling wine production. On the nose are scents of
strawberries and roses. This refreshing wine should
be chilled and paired with non-acidic fruits like
strawberries and peaches. It will also work with
walnuts, hazelnuts and pistachios as well as fruit
tarts or sponge cakes. (Great for brunch as well)! |

Fantinel NV
Extra Dry Prosecco (Friuli) Sparkling white Reg
Price/This Month $12.99/$11.69
What’s warm weather without a Wosecco? Excuse
me…
Prosecco. We like to have a little fun here at the
Spirited Gourmet and that’s what Prosecco is all
about. This is not a serious wine to contemplate
over. It’s light, refreshing and easy going. It’s
perfect for chilling out with friends, and makes a
great wedding wine when Champagne seems too pricey.
Its crisp, green apple flavors will pair with
seafood, shellfish and grilled chicken. |
Zabu 2005 Nero
D’Avola (Sicily) Red
Reg Price/This Month $9.99/$8.99
One of the most phenomenal Sicilian values I’ve come
across in eons! On the nose, it is fresh, with tar,
red licorice, hazelnut, blueberry and wild berry
overtones. On the palate, it is supple and offers
smokier, fleshier fruit sensations. It ends with a
bit of raspberry and chocolate. Many of you were
introduced to the white wine – Inzolia – from this
winery a month ago. You’re going to LOVE this one! |

Aia
Dei Colombi 2006 Fiano
(Sannio, Campania) White
Reg Price/This Month $13.99/$12.59
Probably the most assertive and interesting white
grape
in Campania is Fiano, whose flavor is often strongly
reminiscent of pine nuts and herbs. This is a medium
to full-bodied wine that will pair with lighter
seafood dishes such as octopus and cuttlefish. The
best thing about this particular winery’s Fiano is
that is a supreme value. Most Fianos on the market
generally cost at least $15 a bottle! A super value
here! |
Casa Zuliani
2004 Pinot Grigio
(Friuli) White
Reg Price/This Month $15.99/$14.39
Everyone knows Pinot Grigio, right? …That light,
crisp,
easy-going wine that is the #2 selling white wine in
America? Well, get ready for a switch-up! This Pinot
Grigio comes from the north-east region of Friuli
and the wines produced here are richer and thicker
than your average PGs. Aromas of acacia flowers,
almonds, butterscotch and ripe melon emerges from
the glass. Works great with prosciutto and
deli-cuts. |

Saladini
Pilastri 2003 Rosso Piceno “Piediprato”
(Le Marche) Red
Reg Price/This Month $12.99/$11.69
Rosso Piceno is a small area that like Tuscany uses
a
large
amount of the varietal Sangiovese. This wine is a
super-value. “…it boasts a big, sweet nose of black
cherries, roasted herbs, meat, and damp earth. This
attractive, spicy wine borders on being rustic,
resulting in a fleshy, country Italian red with
undeniable character as well as flavor depth.” –
90 points, Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate |
Bastianich
2007 Rosato (Friuli)
Reg Price/This Month $14.99/$13.49
Does the name sound familiar? “Cooking with Lidia”
anyone? Yes. The famous Lidia Bastianich has a
winery in Friuli, Italy and her son Joseph is chief
winemaker. This rosato, made from 100% Refosco, is a
medium-bodied, intensely colored rosé with a complex
and extremely attractive nose of rose petals,
violets and plums. On the palate, plumy red fruit
flavors predominate in a long finish of surprising
depth and complexity. |
