Sparkling Wine Tasting Notes

Veuve Elise NV Blanc de Blancs, France - $7.99

Light Body, Fruity, Dry Finish/ Buttered toast on the nose of this fine sparkling wine, followed by a broad, fruity palate with well-cut acidity.   It’s the value you’ve got to have in the house for the holidays!  You wont’ believe how good this is!!!

Dibon Cava Brut Reserve, Penedes, Spain - $9.99

Cava, Catalan sparkling wine, is made mostly in the regions of Penedes, and the capital of cava is Sant Sadurni d´Anoia. Dibon is located in Vilafranca del Penedes, aproximately 20 Km from Sant Sadurni.Different types of cava are made using Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada and Chardonnay grapes. Sometimes wine from non-cava production is added to the mix, and cava is left to undergo a fermentation process on its yeast for a period of 9 months to 5 years. Dibon only uses natural yeasts for its Cava production. At this point, cava is still not cava; it still needs to go through remuage -- the agitation process. For very high-quality cava, this process is still done by hand. A month and a half later, all of the yeast residue rises to the top of the bottle. The bottle is then frozen and the lump of frozen yeast residue removed.

“Dibon is new to us, and after tasting this complete, well-made Cava we are happy to make its acquaintance. The nose offers regal yeast and richness, while the palate has complexity to prop up apple, citrus and grapefruit flavors. Solid from front to back, with health and freshness.” 88 points, The Wine Enthusiast

Gruet NV Blanc de Noirs, New Mexico - $14.99

In 1984, Gilbert Gruet, whose Champagne house, Gruet et Fils had produced fine Champagne in Bethon, France, since 1952, made the decision to plant an experimental vineyard, exclusively planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes 170 miles south of Albuquerque.   1987 was the first harvest and in 1989 their wines were introduced to the rest of the world!

“Elegant and focused, with creamy vanilla and apple aromas and rich yet crisp flavors of baked pear and cinnamon bread. Drink now through 2014.” 90 points, The Wine Spectator, Top 100 Wines of 2011

De Faveri ‘Spago’ Prosecco di Frizzante, Veneto, Itay - $14.99

Always charming, it comes as a surprise that the Prosecco grape is a hardy creature, at its best in hillside vineyards such as the Colli Trevigiani.  In the Veneto, the locals prefer the slightly less fizzy ‘frizzante’ to the full pressure brut (with the cork secured with string or ‘spago’ rather than a wire cage).  Round and seductive, De Faveri’s ‘Spago’ is almost too easy to drink, with oodles of tangy lemon and cling peach fruit.

Nino Franco NV Rustico Prosecco, Veneto, Italy - $19.99

“The NV Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Rustico is a rather exuberant yet steely, powerful Prosecco. White peaches, crushed rocks, smoke and flowers are some of the nuances that flow from this large-scaled, important Prosecco. A rich, textured finish rounds things out nicely. The Rustico is far from an easy-going cocktail wine, and is sure to be better at the table than on its own. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013.

Nino Franco is one of the top names in serious Prosecco. At their best, these wines will make readers reconsider the conventional wisdom that Prosecco is a simple, straightforward aperitif wine” 90 points, A. Galloni, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Domaine Rolet 2007 Crémant du Jura, Jura, France - $19.99

This vintage sparkler is made from 70% Chardonnay, 15% Poulsard and 15% Pinot Noir. Like the finest bubblies of Champagne, it is a pretty pale color, with light green reflections, and offers very beautiful fine bubbles that climb slowly with an enticing persistence. It deserves center stage for holiday parties and gatherings of all types.

Mumm Napa NV ‘Cuvée M’, Napa, California - $24.99

An extremely affordable alternative to White Star!

Cuvée M is a modern, slightly sweet sparkling release. Light peach rose in the glass, aromas are elegant, rich and complex, showing fresh white and yellow stone fruits with subtle hints of wild strawberry. A heady touch of fresh brioche, with hints of vanilla and honey add to the wine’s complex bouquet. Flavors of peach and pear combine with a creamy caramel character, on a long, satisfying finish. Great for champagne cocktails or as an aperitif with hors d’oeuvres. Cuvee M also matches up beautifully to creamy desserts Cuvée spicy entrées.

Westport Rivers 2006 RJR Wesport Brut, Westport, MA - $29.99

Our farm is the home of the fourth generation of a family of winegrowers. In 1982 we set ourselves up on the sunny, South Coast of Massachusetts. Why? Because we knew, based upon a study of the climate and soils, that this is a wonderful location for growing the kind of wine we love: gloriously aromatic, deliciously crisp wine.

The RJR 2006 is a superb traditional method sparkler with loads of lovely frothy mousse. Lively aromas of pear, apple, white cherry and subtle toast float over flavors of bright fruit and mouthwatering acidity.

Schramsberg 2007 Brut Rosé, North Coast, California - $39.99

Schramsberg Brut Rosé is flavorful, complex and dry, making it both versatile with food and delicious by itself as an apéritif. The character of the wine is most strongly influenced by bright, flavorful Pinot Noir grown in Carneros, Anderson Valley, and the Sonoma and Marin coastal areas. A few small lots of Pinot Noir are fermented in contact with their skins to add depth and subtle color to this unique sparkling wine. Chardonnay gives spice, structure and length on the palate.

It’s one of the best American sparkling wines we’ve had in a long time. The grape composition is 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and are sourced from the following: 36% Napa, 33% Sonoma, 23% Mendocino, 8% Marin.

“Boldly structured, yet retains a sense of delicacy, with floral strawberry and spice aromas and full-bodied cherry, vanilla and caramel apple flavors that linger on a festive finish. Drink now through 2014.” 91 points, The Wine Spectator

Louis de Sacy NV Grand Cru Brut, Champagne, France - $34.99

Louis de Sacy is an artisanal, family-owned Champagne house that has produced Grand Crus since 1633. Twelve generations of the Sacy family have maintained the 50-acre, family-owned vineyard in Verzy, France. Louis de Sacy now produces 270,000 bottles of hand-cultivated Champagne per year. In 2011, it expanded distribution into new cities in the United States and now provides four Grand Cru Champagnes to top-tier restaurants and retailers.

“Rich and powerful, this Champagne wraps light red berry, pastry and citrus flavors around a firm spine. Balanced, with a creamy, tactile finish that's long and expansive.” 90 points, Wine Spectator

Drappier NV Brut Nature Pinot Noir ‘Zero Dosage’, Champagne, France - $49.99

This 100% Pinot Noir is derived from mature vines facing due south on an upper Jurassic period incline.  The blend is from reserve wines taken from three former vintages.  This Zero Dosage, has no sugar added; residual sugar is less than 3g/l.  The wine is brilliant with copper highlights and displays notes of red fruits and vineyard peaches.  The palate is intense and fresh, with quince, blackcurrant and gingerbread.  It is clean, precise and dry!

Pol Roger NV Brut Reserve, Champagne, France - $49.99

It is common knowledge that the true quality of a Champagne house is best judged by the consistency and quality of their non-vintage wine. This is where the true "house style" is defined and executed year in/ year out. Pol Roger is a firm believer in this philosophy and takes extreme pride in their "White Foil" Brut.

The "White Foil" is sourced from top quality vineyards in Montagne de Reims (Pinot Noir), Vallee de al Marne and Petite Valle d'Epernay (Pinot Meunier) and the Cote des Blancs (Chardonnay).

**Champagne Pol Roger was delighted that their Brut Réserve Non Vintage, had been chosen to be served at the reception following the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales to Miss Catherine Middleton on 29th April 2011.**

"Rich notes of pear pastry, toasted almond, smoke and honey are well-meshed with and balanced by fresh notes of lemon peel, quince and grated ginger, all knit with the finely tuned acidity and creamy mousse." 91 points, A. Napjus, The Wine Spectator

"Classy Champagne with fine beads and delicate mousse. Intense Colour, aromas and flavours of crystallised fruit, rich butterscotch and savoury tart. Long and pleasant finish." Silver Medal, Decanter World Wine Awards, 2011

"There are a number of equally famous non-vintage Champagnes on the market but Pol Roger has a dryness and finesse I find particularly suited to grand feasts such as Christmas." Will Lyons, Wall St Journal

Jacques Picard 2002 ‘Arte de Vigne’ Brut, Champagne, France - $89.99

“70% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay; raised in two-year-old barriques Pale gold with an energetic mousse. Smoky orange, floral honey and mineral aromas expand with air, picking up subtle herbal and green tea qualities. Vivid orange and honey flavors display impressive depth, with a jolt of back-end minerality adding vivacity. Finishes with brisk, tangy notes of citrus pith and dusty minerals.” 92 points, J. Raynolds, Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

Pol Roger 2002 Brut Rose, Champagne, France - $99.99 net

Pol Roger only produces the Brut Rosé in vintage years. The wine is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay vinified blanc from 20 1er and Grand Crus in the Montagne de Reims and Cote des Blancs regions. The remaining 15% is Pinot Noir that has been vinified "en rouge" and then added to the final blend prior to the second fermentation

"I had great difficulty tasting this: every time I went to spit it out, I swallowed it! It was so moreish, I couldnt help myself. Exquisite pale peach colour, sublime mousse, tantalising fruit, so yummy yet so classy how on earth do they do that? The 2002 is a rosé of extraordinary finesse." Tom Stevenson, Decanter UK, - 5 Stars/ 19.5 out of 20 points

“"The 2002 Brut Rose Extra Cuvee de Reserve is a gorgeous wine, even if it is a bit buttoned up at this stage. Layers of well-delineated aromatics emerge over time, melding seamlessly into a chiseled, precise core of fruit. This shows quite a bit of depth and richness, all while maintaining superb freshness and clarity. Though delicious today, I imagine this will be a highly rewarding bottle to follow over the next decade or so. This is an absolutely exquisite Champagne from Pol Roger.” 93+ points, A. Galloni, Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Bright, orange-tinged pink. A complex bouquet displays redcurrant, cherry pit, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Deeply concentrated but almost shockingly energetic flavors of redcurrant, bitter cherry, allspice and candied licorice. Finishes juicy and very long, with a bright mineral note adding to the impression of nerve and focus. Lots of people claim that rose Champagne doesn't age well but I'll bet that this one will." 94 points,  Josh Raynolds, Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

Moet Chandon 2002 Dom Perignon, Champagne, France - $150 net

“The 2002 Dom Perignon is at first intensely floral, with perfumed jasmine that dominates the bouquet. With time in the glass the wine gains richness as the flavors turn decidedly riper and almost tropical. Apricots, passion fruit and peaches emerge from this flashy, opulent Dom Perignon. The wine’s volume makes it approachable today, but readers in search of more complexity will want to cellar this for at least a few years to allow for some of the baby fat to drop off. Geoffroy describes the vintage as very ripe and adds that some of the Chardonnay showed the ill-effects of the hot growing season in the somewhat burned, dehydrated fruit that came in that year. This bottle was disgorged in July, 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2032” 96 points, A. Galloni, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Pol Roger 1999 Sir Winston Churchill Cuvée, Champagne, France - $200 net

The friendship between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to the 1928 vintage of Pol Roger. This deep friendship continued until his death and created a deep link between the two families. Among his array of famous quotes, Sir Churchill once called Pol Roger "the world's most drinkable address".

To commemorate this friendship, Pol Roger produced the premiere release of "Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill" with the 1975 vintage, which was produced in magnum only and released in 1984. Since then, 11 vintages have been produced with 1999 being the 12th.

While the exact blend is a family secret, it is believed that the wine is blended to meet the late Churchill's approval and is most likely a majority of Pinot Noir. Grapes are sourced from old vines located exclusively in Grand Cru vineyards. Like all Pol Roger Champagnes this cuvée is fermented in stainless steel at very low temperatures. The wine is aged in the deepest portions of the Pol Roger cellars for an average of 10 years prior to release.

“With its richness and great density of flavor, this is always a great Champagne. This 1999 is rounder than some vintages, less mineral, while still retaining the balance between white fruit and toast. It is still young, still slightly textured and ageworthy over several years.” 96 points, R. Voss, The Wine Enthusiast

“Pale yellow-gold. Deep, pungent nose offers an array of orchard and citrus fruit qualities, along with notes of iodine, minerals and toasty lees. Chewy and impressively concentrated, with excellent clarity to its pear and orange flavors. The toasty quality gains strength with air and carries through an impressively long, spicy, floral finish. Very impressive, especially for a release from what is widely considered a so-so vintage for Champagne” 94 points, J. Raynolds, Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

"The 1999 Brut Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill, from magnum, is wonderfully rich and expansive, proving yet again just how well suited the big bottle is to Champagne. Smoke, peaches, mint and flowers are just some of the nuances that flow from this textured kaleidoscopic Champagne. The wine continues to gain focus and breadth through to the enticing, brilliant finish. Disgorged July, 2009." 94 points, A. Galloni, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Roederer 2002 Cristal, Champagne, France - $230 net

“Subtle notes of pears, flowers, spices, mint, minerals and oak are woven into a cashmere-like frame of extraordinary grace and elegance. This beautifully-sculpted Champagne possesses notable clarity but with the additional depth of fruit that is characteristic of this vintage. It is a gorgeous, seductive Cristal of the highest level. In 2002, Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay with 10 grams of dosage. 20% of the wine was fermented in oak. This bottle was disgorged in June 28th, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2032.” 96+ points, A. Galloni, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Dessert Wines and Ports

Graham’s 10yr Tawny Porto, Douro, Portugal - $34.99

Graham’s Aged Tawny Ports are made from wines of the very highest quality which, following careful selection, are blended and subsequently matured in seasoned casks for a number of years until their peak of maturity is attained. These are among the most demanding and challenging styles of Port to produce, requiring great skill and years of experience from the winemaker. It is essential to strike the correct balance between the delicacy and elegance which results from prolonged cask-ageing and the rich fruit quality which lends these old tawnies their structure, freshness and longevity.

Graham’s aged tawnies show a characteristic ‘nutty’ quality and delicious mature honeyed fruit, exquisitely mellowed by ageing in seasoned oak casks. This 10 year Tawnay displays a deep amber color, complex orange peel and marzipan aromas. Flavorful rich fruitcake spiciness with hints of walnuts, beautifully mellowed with an elegant, long finish.

Ferreira Dona Antonia Reserva Porto, Douro, Portugal - $16.99

Ferreira Dona Antónia is a premium reserve red Porto, created to celebrate the memory of the charismatic lady. Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. that in the 19th century led and inspired the company to gain its future, confirming the values that would established it as leading quality winemakers and number one brand in Portugal.

Its bouquet is intense and rich with hints of very ripe fruit (plum, apricot and marmalade) and floral notes. Complex, its spice and dry fruit notes derive from the evolution in oak wood, through oxidation in the mouth, it is a full-bodied and rich-flavored wine, extremely well balanced, that combines elegance with a delicate yet persistent finish.

Ferreira Dona Antónia is a most versatile Porto wine. It is very good served on its own, accompanying some selected entrées or as dessert wine. It also accompanies beautifully most sweets, desserts and cheeses. Serve slightly cold for fuller appreciation.

Standing Stone Vineyards ’08 Vidal Ice Wine 375ml, Finger Lakes, NY - $24.99

In 1991, owners Tom & Marti McKinski purchased historic vineyards on the east side of Seneca Lake. A long line of venerable vintners spent years researching the quality of these lands. They followed in their footsteps by growing wines in the same historic vineyards that served Gold Seal Vineyards so well in the past.

History became their best teacher, for conditions on the rolling hillsides above Seneca Lake proved ideal for growing and harvesting premium grapes and subsequently crafting heavenly wines. In just a few short years, their boutique winery began to make history with a prized selection of award-winning wines. They continue to reap honors and critical acclaim on the wine circuit, but we've only just begun to show our potential. They plan to move into the history of the future, with the great vineyards of the world, bringing much deserved recognition to the new world-class wines of the Finger Lakes.

“Ripe, with very sweet maple, creamed peach, dried apricot and ginger notes that drive through the green tea-tinged finish. Serious zip keeps it all mouthwatering. Drink now through 2015.” -92 points Wine Spectator

Chateau Memoires '05 Cadillac - $19.99; half bottles $12.99

Formely known as a part of the Premières Cotes de Bordeaux appellation, Cadillac was given its own AOC status in 1973 because of the unique combination of chalk and gravel in its soil.  Many wines are made in a semi-sweet style, but a small amount, like the Mémoires, are made in the style of Sauternes.  This wine smells of ripe peaches and apricot, has a fruity and sweet palate with great balance.   (A David Raines Selection).

“Perrone’s 2010 Bigaro (Moscato, Brachetto) is one of Italy’s finest dessert wines. The 2010 is tight, minerally and wonderfully focused. I especially like the energy here. Citrus, rose petals and spices wrap around the long, expansive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013.

Stefano Perrone makes a number of delicious wines, but truly excels with his Moscati and other sweet wines. I always try to have a few bottles on hand” – 91 points, A. Galloni, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Turtle Creek 2008 Late Harvest Zinfandel, Lincoln, MA - $21.99

"Turtle Creek Winery is an artisan winery located in Lincoln, Massachusetts and I have lots of respect for its owner/winemaker, Kip Kumler.  The winery produces wines from both imported grapes as well as from those in their own vineyards.  Kip is truly passionate about his wines, and it shows in their quality.”

"Staggering quality for the price and the degree of difficulty that this variety brings. Plenty of ripe apricot and stone fruits here, and a little spice and honeysuckle too. The palate's supple and gently rich, with apricot and gentle nutty flavours, and smooth, chalky texture; great balance to boot."  91 points, Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2012

Poppy 2009 Old Vine Zinfandel ‘D’Arrigo Family Vineyard’,  Lodi, CA - Red - $15.99

Victor Hugo 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles, CA - Red - $21.99

Intense aromas of black cherry and chocolate with wisps of spice are complimented by a background of subtle oak. Oddero 2008 Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy - Red - $15.99

The Oddero winery is located in Santa Maria, a hamlet of La Morra, at Borgata Tetti 28. One part is used for winemaking, while the other historic section, dating back to the end of the 18th century, is used for maturing and ageing the wines.

Every generation has contributed to the buildings, while keeping intact the L-shaped outline, characteristic of Langhe farmhouses. The wines are vinified in stainless steel and oak, while the refinement takes place in Slavonian, Austrian and French oak barrels.

This is an amazing Barbera value - Intense ruby-red color with purple tinges, a bouquet of fully ripe fruit, with an excellent dash of freshness. Tannins are prominent in the mouth, maintaining the classic Barbera backbone, thanks to its pleasant acidity.

Borgo Boschetto 2010 Merlot, Venezia Giulia, Italy - Red - $9.99
