Here at the Spirited Gourmet we’re always trying to select the new wines to keep things fresh. Reds

2006 Cantarutti Tocai Friulano
One finds Friuli nestled in the northeastern corner of Italy sandwiched between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. The vines are planted on the sunny slopes of the mountains, so the grapes ripen fully and create wines that are by no means shy in fruit or grip. Tocai Friulano is one of the region's native varietals and the Cantarutti shows lovely texture, minerality, and racy acidity. With its fleshy white fruit flavors, floral aromatics, and touch of almonds, it's a terrific aperitif or better yet paired with prosciutto and melon.

Retail $15.99/SpiritedSix $12.79

2003 Pilastri Piediprato Rosso Piceno
The appellation of Rosso Piceno is located in the Marches along the Adriatic Sea midway up the boot of Italy. The winery used their very best grapes for this blend of half Sangiovese and half Montepulciano. This produces a lovely rich, dark wine full of spice and pepper notes. The wine drinks somewhat like an Amarone with notes of figs and raisins. Its refined tannins and bright acidity also make it a great pairing with roasts and other red meats.

Retail $11.99/SpiritedSix $9.59

2005 Butterfield Station Chardonnay California
The winery sources its Chardonnay and French Colombard from vines located in the Lodi and Monterey appellations. Their delicious wine offers crisp apple and tropical fruit flavors with a delicate taste of crème brulee and mellow, vanilla-toasted oak. It’s aged sur lie for five months, undergoes 99% malolactic fermentation and is even 80% barrel-fermented, all which adds up to a silky, creamy Chardonnay. Great by itself or with chicken and sweet potato chowder.

Retail $9.99/SpritedSix $7.99

2006 Domaine des Cedres Cotes du Rhones
Cotes du Rhone are the classic French bistro wines. If you order a glass of red wine in a café almost anywhere in France odds are you’ll get one of these Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre blends. The Cedres shows terrific red plum and cherry notes packed tightly in a bright red package bursting with acidity. It’s not only delicious it’s also organic as it’s made from certified organic grapes. Should be great with roasted game birds or lamb shish-kabob.

Retail $13.99/SpiritedSix $11.19

2007 Quinta Alorna Arintho Portugal
The Ribatejo region is the only province in Portugal that borders neither the ocean nor Spain. The varietal Arintho is the oldest documented grape in history, mentioned by name in Shakespeare’s Henry IV. The Quinta (winery) Alorna’s Arintho is wonderfully fruity with loads of pear and melon aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and rich, it should pair nicely with grilled seafood steaks.

2005 Vintage Ink Red California
Vintage Ink is one of those yummy California reds that combines everything one looks for in wine in one fun and affordable package. It is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, but smaller quantities of Merlot and Syrah are blended to add fruit and soften the edges. The wine brings delicious flavors from all three varietals; black currants, plums, blueberries and raspberries are all packed together in a medium to full body. It’s the perfect midweek Tex Mex wine.

Retail $12.99/SpiritedSix $10.39

2006 Spann Vineyards
Chardonnay/Viognier Sonoma

Spann Vineyards from Sonoma County makes wines
that are both unique in lovely. Their blend of Chardonnay combines the gorgeous aromatics and richness of Viognier with stainless steel fermented Chardonnay which provides the acidity. Mouthwatering, it should drink very nicely by itself or with steamed lobster or crab cakes.

Retail $19.99/SpiritedSix $15.99

2002 Spann Syrah Sonoma
Another Spann Vineyards offering this month is their Syrah sourced from the Russian River Valley. California Syrahs vary in style from rich fruit bombs
to tight spicy bright reds. The Spann Syrah shows with an incredible intensity of black and blue fruits, inky purple color, and amazing concentration. This is a great match for all richly flavored red meat dishes. It also received a gold medal at the 2004 Sonoma County Harvest Fair.

Retail $14.99/SpiritedSix $11.99

2005 Chateau Champ de Treilles Bordeaux
The Champs de Treilles is produced by the same
winemaker of the famous Bordeaux from Pauillac, Chateau Pontet-Canet. He uses his same skill in making this 100% Semillon produced from vines upwards of 60 years old. It shows medium bodied with notes of apricot and pear and, since the wine is partially barrel-fermented, finishes with just a hint of vanilla. It should be a nice pairing with swordfish or tuna steaks.

Retail $12.99/SpiritedSix $10.39

2005 Chateau d’Aydie Les Sarments
France Vin de Pays

The winery blends Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon into a medium-bodied, fruity red that’s a great summer sipper. Tannat is usually a varietal that produces rustic, strong, even harsh wines, however the winery does a great job of taming its aggressiveness. With fruity notes of plums and cherries and a smooth finish, the wine shows great drinkability. Should be a nice French alternative to that Italian red served on pizza night

Retail $10.99/SpiritedSix $8.79

2006 Frederic Gueguen Petit Chablis
Like all Chablis, this wine is 100% Chardonnay, but unlike some of the burly California Chards this wine
is fresh, clean, and inviting. Little to no oak is used, so one enjoys only the beautiful Chardonnay fruit. Petit Chablis is a lower appellation than the greater examples of the region, namely the premier and grand cru, but the wine overcompensates nicely with touches of melon and citrus. Try with oysters or mussels.

Retail $17.99/SpiritedSix $14.39

2004 Quinta San Francisco Portugal
This wine is produced in the town of Obidos in central Portugal. It is comprised of varietals native only to Portugal, namely Castelao, Argonez and Touriga Nacional, the latter considered the finest of all the Portuguese varietals and the most important grape that comprises Ports. The San Francisco is full-bodied and rich with aromas and flavors of dark fruits, a touch of earth, and a spicy finish. Should be superb with grilled meats.
